Stock purchase plans had something to offer mom and pop that wanted to avoid the big bad commissions only to buy a few shares of a stock. but look at the facts...
Commissions on trades are now insignificant if you care to trade on the Web. A purchase of one share of DELL stock only gets a hit of around 10% for the buy side commission at the discount brokers like Datek($9.99). Schwab, who is a trusted name for those who are more risk adverse, will sell you the same one share for a $30 commission. Face it.. folks can save and buy 10 at a time and make even this "high commission" look reasonable at 3%.
Times are changing. Stock purchase plans are old world. Web trading is the new paradigm.
