Very interesting. Linux is definitely becoming a threat to NT and if IBM can deliver a killer Java office suite it will be a double whammy for Microsoft. It all boils down to work product: e-mail, business correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, et cetera. You have to ask yourself: What are the work products and how can I generate them more efficiently and more effectively than I'm doing it now? I'm sorry but it does not take Windows '95 or Windows NT with Microsoft Office. That's about 90% bloat and 10% useful software. Design that 10% from the ground up for a modern, secure, distributed environment based on highly extensible and reusable object technology. Add the vertical market components when and where needed. Microsoft has been rewriting, rewrapping, patching and glueing that COM abortion for too long and it's getting weak at the knees. They have done the same sort of patchwork on Visual Basic to the point where anybody using all the new glue-on features is better off using the REAL THING: Java or C++ with an interactive IDE.
