I think I have found a name that Compaq MUST use.

Compaq can use a name the sounds more "worldly" than IBM (International Business Machines Corp.), and it will be bigger. Compaq can be kept for the brand name of computers.

I like the way the name WorldCom instantly changed the image of the original company. (And it is better translated into other languages, such as Chinese, much better than Compaq's translation for its image and business nature.) In addition to the effects to its external image, a good name can help a company makes its vision more clear and be more aware internally.

"IT" is known for its connection with "IT department" of bigger companies. Professionals and business world know it as encompassing many areas of information technology and services. "World Information Technology" might have been used already and we want a shorter name. So here is my suggestion:

WorldIT or "World IT" (WIT).

For an ad campaign or for its vision statement, Compaq can say "World IT, IT for the World".
Or "World IT will world it for you" for those big businesses, and would its mark of making "world" as a verb in the English language.

I think I am getting serious about this. I want suggest this to Compaq. Could Rudedog or anyone pass this suggestion on to your influential insiders at Compaq? If they like it, it'd better register this name FAST! It is not been found on the Internet yet.
