(COMTEX) B: EU Citizens Among the Top Fish Eaters B: EU Citizens Among the Top Fish Eaters BRUSSELS (July 20) XINHUA - Consumption by each European Union citizen of fish and fish products each year ranks among the highest in the world, second only to that in Iceland and Japan, Eurostat reported Monday. The Luxembourg-based statistical office said a European ate an average of 22 kilograms of fish and fish products a year, and fish supplies around six percent of the European's protein intake. In Iceland and Japan, consumption of fish and fish products amounts to 93 kilograms and 68 kilograms a person per year, respectively. The 15-member E.U. groups Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Greece, Sweden, Denmark and Britain. In the bloc, Portugal and Spain top the fish consumption scale with an annual 57 kilograms and 39 kilograms for each person, while landlocked Austria has the smallest per capita fish consumption of 10 kilograms. Coastal Germany and the Netherlands are also low in fish consumption, both with 12 kilograms per person annually. Denmark is the largest producer of fish and fish products, with an output amounting to a quarter of the E.U. total, followed by Spain and Britain. Nearly 85 percent of the catch of the bloc, together with non-members Norway and Iceland, comes from the northeast Atlantic, while around six percent is from the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
