JMD:

You have to look at the strategic fit of VSAT to Loral in a number of ways. Loral, if they owned ViaSat, would be able to offer an almost complete telephony solution to customers from satellite to ground terminal. Throw in a NorTel switch and there you have it. That is not all though--C* will need a two way VSAT for their phase 2, as will Skybridge when it is finalized. PCMA technology is applicable to several areas in the Loral empire. Military communication sats are a market that Loral has not participated in as of late(at least as much as they tell us--there is $400 million in non-commercial backlog at SS/L). That is an area that could be more easily serviced with the ground portion in house. The defense portion at first glance would appear to be useless to Loral. Take another look though, and it is a hot bed of government funded research that ultimately works its way into commercial applications. Not a bad way to fund R&D. The same could be said for a fit with Alcatel as well. Loral could absorb ViaSat using stock without any pain. There are about 8.2 million ViaSat shares, and fully diluted 320 million+ Loral shares. I'll take one LOR for each of my VSAT!
