<<KEMET blames low Q1 on shipping, palladium

GREENVILLE, S.C., July 20 (Reuters) - KEMET Corp. said Monday the decline in its first quarter earnings was due to high palladium costs and depressed shipments.

The company said in a statement that its first quarter fell to $1.5 million, or $0.04 per share versus $14.0 million, or $0.36 per share. Net sales fell to $142.5 million in the first quarter ended June 30 from net sales of $161.2 million.

It said that its major customers were experiencing slower sales growth, particularly in Asia. When combined with channel inventory corrections, it has depressed shipments.

The manufacturer of solid tantalum capacitors said its workforce cuts to match reduced shipment volumes, decreased period costs and the continuing palladium reduction program are expected to help protect margins.>>
