On the evolution if IS-95.

I spoke with the company regarding the Lucent/Nortel disclosures and this should not be interpreted as a balkanization of the IS-95 community. Within cdmaOne vendor community there is a desire to offer a higher data-rate solution by the year 2000 (at least 2 years before ERICY's proposed W-CDMA). This has resulted in a standards-setting process which invariably contains posturing and agendas..like making sausage, the process ain't pretty, but the result is generally tasty. It's in nobody's interest to bifurcate the standard (and get themselves be orphaned). Moreover, Nortel is obligated to share its infrastructure orders with QC (so it is cannot really build something incompatible) and Lucent is actually proving to be quite a friend of QC (to an extent that I find a little worrisome actually). Finally, none of this has any impact on QC royalties. So guys, its really much ado about nothing.

Best regards,

Gregg
