Oh, Mark, I understand the basic argument for the NC.
I just don't believe it. ;)
Biggest problem for NCs is the need to re-write almost all software. Heck, that's an even taller order than fixing all the Y2K problems.
Perhaps Sun's real plan is to be part of some gigantic WPA-type program after 2000, to keep all those programmers employed. Geriatric Cobol programmers can be re-trained to write Java code.
I actually think that all this NC nonsense is one of the major factors that has held back SUNW stock for the past year. Many investors see nothing but the Java hype, with nothing to show for it. If they dig hard enough, they will see that SUNW has the Internet server business locked-up, and that is carrying the company and will carry it into the future, and is what the company is really about.
Unfortunately, though, it takes time for investors to realize what they have. It's too bad the company won't give them a little help with some much-needed focus.
Oh, the internal focus is there, but externally all attention is drawn to the smoke and mirrors.
I suppose, though, this is what makes SUNW such a good buy. There's a undiscovered profitable business under that heap o' Java. |
