Jeffrey: In the mid-late '80s, the mask generators were a number of years ahead of the minimum feature size roadmap. Today, I believe there is no gap as evidenced by the fact that Etec can not ship new tools fast enough. We Etec fans have a big benefactor - Microslop. They will keep cranking out shovelware and it will require faster and faster machines to execute. Coupled with the expansion of digital video, the capability (i.e., time-bandwidth product) of digital processors must increase dramatically. Consequently, the silicon real estate will become more dense and I see a bright future for Etec for the next several years unless management screws up (as I've said before, the managers seem relatively untested). Even if the fabs are hard pressed for a long time, they will have no choice but to upgrade their mask generation tools. Sage
