Sumitomo delays U.S. plant expansion

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A planned $265 million
expansion of the Sumitomo Sitix Silicon wafer plant
here has been put on hold and the plant will be shut down for a week in August, it was reported here
recently.

"We've slowed down a little bit with everything
that's going in the semiconductor industry," said
plant manager Keith Hampe. "Our business has
slowed down. We thought it was wise to slow down
the expansion."

The plant employs about 160 people. The expansion
would have added about 330 more jobs. Hampe said
neither the expansion delay nor the August
shutdown will result in job losses. Employees will
attend off-site training classes during the shutdown.

"We see this as temporary," Hampe said, adding
that the expansion is should resume sometime next
year. "It's all still going to happen."
