Re: Forbes article

Interesting but very lightweight article. Example: "With this equipment, you could, for example, simultaneously have your Web browser downloading a giant video file in the background while you type away on a memo in the foreground. Or you could be receiving a fax while reading a memo and watching a basketball game in the corner of your screen." Hardly challenging examples for today's Wintel competition.

More disturbing is the following quote attributed to Amelio: "Gates will deny this, but he is very anxious to get 100% of the market because when he absolutely cuts you off and moves into the new world, he doesn't want to worry about losing customers". The thesis seems to be that throw-out-everything-and-start-anew is inevitable. If Amelio really believes that Wintel's strategy is to force massive incompatibilities and discontinuities on the world, then it seems to me what he's really doing is rationalizing the lack-of backwards compatibility to the existing MacOS base in any future BeOS-Mac hybrid.

But perhaps he has no choice. As the article observes: "But continuity is a secondary consideration at Apple. The first consideration is survival."
