What is the difference between " Internet" and "Intranet"

It's not a stupid question at all. This is my understanding. Probably someone with greater expertise could explain it more fully.

I presume you already know what the internet is. An 'intranet' is basically an isolated, private communications system that looks and feels very much like the Web itself. Pages are created just as they are on the internet. A main difference is that there are one or more 'firewalls' between the intranet servers and the outside world. These allow only certain types of information to pass through. For instance, I can't use my ETrade account from work, at least not via computer, which is one of the reasons that I have an account with them (free 800 number trading access). The creation, administration and maintenance of the security measures is a fairly major and ongoing piece of work.

Another difference is that the comms lines are much, much faster. We can put really big graphics on these pages and they will load at decent rates. Presumably, video on demand is not far behind. Perhaps 1/4 of our PCs now have video cameras attached. Typical connect rates (shown when I make my network connection) are 250-500K.

Hope this helps.

Mike
