Re: *** K7 Chip to Hit 1 GHz in 2000

Don't hold your breath.

Is it possible for AMD to triple its clock speed in less than two years?? Yeah.

Is it likely?? Hell NO!!

Unfortunately, AMD keeps making these big promises (or at least Jerry does) but they always seem to falter on the execution. Legal battles with the 486, design problems with the K5, and production problems with the K6.

Besides the fact that there is this disturbing trend of problems, there is also the fact that the much of the production problem with the K6 was 100% preventable. Heads did roll and lessons were learned. But I'm not fully convinced that they won't be forgotten.

I think that the Dresden fab has the potential to be a huge success and hopefully they will have learnt a few lessons about bringing a megafab into production.
