Gottfried, that sounds like a type III poster to me. The serious type. Remember the classification system for problem posters? Here is is again if you're like me - my memory needed to be refreshed...

Of course, the false information didn't originate at SI, but it easily could have.

I was recently reading a book by a well-known Yale professor that had a chapter on "Disinformation Design" - "corrupted information designed to deceive". In the old days before the electronic age, they used to call it "distraction displays", or more simply called - "magic".

The Internet certainly isn't immune to snake-oil remedies, tricks, deceit and lies. People will be people, and unfortunately it's the communications medium and people associated with the medium [the Internet and the host web site in this instance] that all-too-often gets blamed, or associated in a negative way, for what people do. Sorta like blaming the gun when people get shot.

I agree, freedom of speech has its limits, and in this case it seems to me the victim/s might best be advised to consult with an attorney. From what I read in the article (falsely stating in public that a person has/had prostate cancer), I certainly would if I were the target.

BTW, the above assumes the article you referenced was real and accurate. <g>
