ztect, I misrepresent Planet City's point-of-view if it sounds like I'm saying that the only demographic they are after is (Intel) 486 PCs. According to PINC, there are some chips by AIM and, I believe other manufactures, that have the same problem.
Also, you are completely in sync with me if you say that Y2K issues are mainly software issues. I'm a software developer--I have an opinion on this! From my point of view, it is such a joke for the company to say on their web page that the Millennium Bug Kit, "will perform a hard disk scan to find any software, which might not be Y2K compatible." From what I gathered in my phone conversation today, you'll simply get a list of every *.exe and *.com on your hard drive and with that you have a list of what might not be Y2K compliant! What a joke!
I really, really, really must be missing something here. There is so much excitement on this thread about distribution deals being made and how a respected ISP will make the MBK their official Y2K solution, that I just can't help but think I must be missing something. Is anyone here saying, "I can't wait to get my hands on this product!... and for only 50 bucks, too!"
Finally, I'm no saint and maybe shouldn't point the finger, however, the company's press releases and web pages make me think that PINC is full of it! They are either deluded, amoral, or both. Submitted for your approval, wording from their July 17 PR:
In addition, the Kit will identify and list the software on your computer that is not year 2000 compliant. The site www.millenniumbugkit.com will answer any questions on the product.
Hunh? If you go to the web site and choose FAQ, you'll get:
We've been so overwhelmed with questions about the year 2000 that our FAQ grew too quickly. Right now the FAQ is being streamlined, and it will be available again in a more comprehensive format. If you've got a question you'd like answered then E-mail us at y2kquestions@millenniumbugkit.com .
Give me a break! These guys could be lawyers for OJ. They have TOO many questions, and that's the reason why they show NO questions! Yeah, right.
There are a couple of reasons why I am not giving up (i.e., selling) my shares yet, but one of them is not the stand-up impression I get from their web page or the answers I received from the company on how valuable their product is to the market.
