Venezuela Approves Sale of Viagra, Should Reduce Counterfeits

Bloomberg News
July 21, 1998, 12:57 p.m. PT
Caracas, July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuela approved the sale
of Pfizer Inc.'s impotence treatment Viagra, hoping to end
surging sales of counterfeits.

The National Health Institute gave final approval yesterday
to the sale, ending several weeks of trial, said the company in a
statement.

Approval should signal the end of a black market for the
drug in Venezuela, as well as the end of counterfeits. Some
street vendors started passing off reshaped and blue-colored
aspirin as the drug during the Father's Day weekend.

Venezuela's fascination with Viagra led to the first
shipment, slated for test trials, being stolen at the port of La
Guaira in May.

U.S. physicians have written more than 2.7 million
prescriptions for the $10-a-pill drug since its introduction in
April.

There are no estimates as to how many potential Venezuelan
customers exist.
