The council voted 11-0 to yank the plan; four council members were absent. Just last Tuesday the council voted unanimously to put the resolution on the agenda. The resolution had asked the Lexington Center Corp., which manages Rupp Arena for the city, for 13 pairs of UK basketball tickets. That would be enough for everyone on the council to get a pair, since two council members serve on the LCC board and already get a pair each.

Almost immediately, a public outcry erupted. Several council members who initially supported the ticket plan dropped it and ran for cover.

But Brown, speaking from Philadelphia where he was attending a conference, had said he wouldn't back off. State legislators, the governor and the mayor all get tickets, he said - and "what's good for the goose is good for the gander."

Mayor Pam Miller conceded yesterday that in this case, UK tickets are no longer good for the goose.
