In regards to INKT's technology being outdated, I can offer a webmaster's perspective.

Software:
Inktomi's indexing algorithm's are still some of the newest and best in the industry. Wired's HotBot, the first Inktomi-powered service, has won by far more first place awards than any other search engine:

Hardware:
Inktomi uses a RAIC architecture (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Computers) which provides cost effective scalability, speed, and fault tolerance. They are known for having one of the largest and quickest refreshing indexes on the Internet. HotBot has reported that it re-crawls the entire "known" web every 2 weeks.

Marketing:
The Inktomi index powers the HotBot and forthcoming Microsoft(MSFT) search engines. It also provides additional results to Yahoo(YHOO), Cnet's(CNWK) Snap and GoTo.com. Plus international search engines such as Canada.com, Anzwers from Australia, Goo from Japan, and RadarUOL from Brazil.

Inktomi's edge is that it doesn't directly compete with it's customers and it enables it's customers to differentiate themselves through various tweaks and changes to the way results are ranked.

Growth:
Since Yahoo has begun using Inktomi as their backup search engine, Inktomi's traffic has increased so much that they are creating a mirrored database in Virginia (their primary database is in California).

From the websites which I administer I have noticed that approximately 22% of Yahoo's referral's are coming from Inktomi. If this percentile is accurate across all websites (a stretch I know, but it's something to go on...), then Inktomi should be increasing its combined reach by almost 7 million visitors propelling it beyond AltaVista, Lycos, and InfoSeek. This calculation is very rough, but Yahoo is definitely having a major impact on the success of Inktomi.

This growth will likely be even more accelerated once Microsoft's search engine is launched.

Inktomi is showing very aggressive growth within the Internet industry. In my opinion INKT stock is just getting started. Go INKT!
