You have to input the number when you get the new machine. Naturally if you change phone numbers or move the machine to another location you have the ability to delete your original input and change it as needed.

If I recall correctly, it was an FCC ruling that came about after death threats were sent via fax to some political types in the Texas area.

My instructions booklet on the two machines I have are very clear on this point.
