Metricom Announces 2nd Quarter, 1998 Results

Company Expands Right-of-Way Activities Into Fourteen Metropolitan Areas, and
Opens New Offices in Eight Cities

LOS GATOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 1998--Metricom, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCOM - news)
today announced results for its 2nd quarter ended June 30, 1998.

Metricom reported revenues of $4.4 million for the 2nd quarter versus $4.7 million for the same period in
1997. Ricochet revenues in the current quarter increased 13% over the comparable quarter from prior year.
The Company reported a net loss for the second quarter of $13.2 million, or $.71 per share, compared to a net
loss of $12.3 million, or $.91 per share for the same period last year. The results for the quarter ended June
30, 1997 exclude a one-time charge of $3.6 million to write-down the Company's investment in Overall
Wireless to its net realizable value.

For the six-month period ended June 30, 1998, revenues totaled $8.0 million, up from $6.5 million for the
same period in 1997. Net loss for the six-month period ended June 30, 1998 was $24.9 million, or $1.41 per
share, compared to a net loss of $26.3 million or $1.94 per share for the same period last year, excluding the
one-time charge to write-down the Company's investment in Overall Wireless in 1997.

''In the second quarter, Metricom continued its progress towards making untethered information access
ubiquitous,'' said Timothy A. Dreisbach, Metricom president and CEO. ''Accomplishments during the
quarter clearly show that Metricom has moved from the strategic planning stage to actual execution.''

Dreisbach continued, ''The customer base for our Ricochet service continues to grow, and we are
approaching 24,000 subscribers. The engineering efforts for our next-generation, high-speed system have
moved out of our lab to a geographically-deployed testbed in the local area. A live demonstration of the
system will be held in New York City on July 22nd and July 23rd.''

During the quarter, Metricom launched Right-of-Way acquisition initiatives for its high-speed network in 14
metropolitan areas. These included the new areas of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, New
York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and San Diego, as well as in our existing service areas of Los Angeles
(partially deployed), San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. New offices were opened in eight of these
cities, with mini-Ricochet networks already connected to the nationwide backbone. Right-of-Way teams have
been trained and are on the ground working. In-person briefing sessions have already been held with
government leaders in over 400 separate municipalities, with very positive results. In keeping with company
policy, specific plans and dates for physical deployment and generally-available service in individual cities
have not been disclosed.

This press release may contain forward-looking statements. These forward-looking statements are subject to
risks and uncertainties. Actual results may differ materially from such forward-looking statements as a result
of risks and uncertainties, including those described in Metricom's 1997 Form 10-K and other reports filed
