Actually, there is significant data in the geologic record supporting the magnitude of the current warming trend, amounting to well more than 100,000 years of temperature and temperature trend data. Much of this information is contained in the polar ice caps and is collected by drilling cores to sample trapped gasses in the thickest parts of the Greenland and Antarctic glaciers. However, more significant information is currently being extracted by analyzing gases trapped in marine sediments; this is stretching the temperature back many millions of years. Global temperatures can be extrapolated by analyzing the ratios of oxygen isotopes(molecules of the same element having different masses due to different numbers of neutrons). As the temperature changes more Oxygen-16 relative to Oxygen-18 will evaporate from the worlds oceans. When it snows in the polar regions, this signature ratio is trapped and preserved. This chaging ratio is also preserved in carbonate sediements (limestones) and reefs.
