At this time, the bearing business is not just a manufacturing in the home plant business but quite largely a distribution and out-sourcing (off shore and Mexico) business. This was the case with New Departure/Midland. New Departure is/was one of the oldest names in bearings. As with any product, there are low end and high end products, OEM (original equipment manufacture) and better. Timken is indeed an old respected name in bearings.

Engineering capabilities and services vary with each company. Torrington-Ingersoll-Rand is known in the industry as an engineering problem solver especially in large bearings (they will work their tail off to get such as printing presses and huge drag-lines back into service) Japanese bearings of certain manufacture are known for their high quality, especially in machine shop tool bearings which call for tolerances in the .0005 run-out and less. In fact, in many applications .0005 is sloppy.

Sorry to go on and on.

The ND which Midland divested itself of was not the ND of old. We would have to have a lot of facts to determine if the devestment was prudent. ND is an old friend to me of 56+ years. Getting old has its problems...seeing changes from the "comfortable old days"

Best,

Marshall
