Netherlands' Customs Officials Intercept Viagra Shipments
July 22, 1998 5:37 AM

AMSTERDAM (AP)--Customs officials are involved in
a nationwide hunt for bottles of Viagra which are being
illegally imported to satisfy a growing demand for the
impotency pill which has not yet been approved for sale
in the Netherlands.

Dozens of packages containing the drug have been
found at postal sorting offices in recent weeks, Dutch
daily De Telegraaf reported Wednesday.

Customs spokesman Peter Mulder said his officers
already have a "black book" of illegal Viagra importers.
"We discover a shipment almost every day," he said.
"Anyone can order a pot of pills from America via the
Internet."

Last week a routine check at Eindhoven airport
uncovered 4,500 pills, which sell for up to 30 guilders
(NLG) ($1=NLG2.0131) each. The pills were being
sent from a German company to a pharmacy in the
southern city of Venlo.

Another NLG50,000 worth of pills were discovered
during a search of the pharmacy. Customs at
Amsterdam's Schiphol airport also regularly intercept
packages containing the pill.

Viagra, made by U.S. company Pfizer Inc. (PFE), is
expected to be given European Union approval in
September, Dutch health ministry spokesman Richard
Lancee said. If it is approved, the drug will be available
in the Netherlands only on prescription.
