When I started in 1971 we were strictly on voice. We used old "Halda" meters which are long since extinct. They were hard iron and had the notable advantage of being the perfect place to smash your passenger's head if you could catch him by the hair off guard before he hit you first! Our radios were old motorolas in two pieces (half in the trunk!)

Our company has 243 cars and has now been computerized since about 1980. Originally we bought a "Gandalf system" from Ottawa; and subsequently upgraded to a system from DDS ( a Company out of Vancouver) in about 1991.

When I first bought in the share price was $10,000.00. They now sell for approx. 90,000.00!

The price is quite artificial because we have a regulatory authority that maintains a quota. Additional plates are fought against tooth and nail by the established Industry...including at the personal level. A very delicate game.

BTW, our cabs are equipped with GPS but that does not stop the assaults and robberies and little bastard gang kids throwing stones, etc. at us when we pass by!

(about a week ago I got hit by a stone about 1:30 in the morning. I avoided the area for about 3 hours, and then had occasion to pass through that way again. I told myself: no way they are still up, still sober, still vigilant. But just to be safe I gunned it as I approached the tenements where it was occuring. BANG! PERFECT AIM! DEAD HIT!

I picked up an unmarked cop about 10 minutes later and waved him over told him the story. He said he'd check it out. I snuck around to the area and saw him driving real slowly down the street with his aerial and his back window light. Do you think they threw stones at him!?

I'm racing through this because I really do have to run. later.

No. I'm not overweight. Was a chain smoker. Quit a couple years ago. You?
