James, if you just surf the net and use a word processor you are right about not needing to move up. But what drives the industry besides business demands is computer games. And the new games are supporting the new (what I listed before, not what you and I are running on) hardware and demanding more.

Game developers are passionate about playing and getting the most. They are the best code writers out there, outside of Nasa and DOD.
The rate of progress is astonishing and the games today take your breathe away, similar to what seeing Star Wars on the big screen for the first time.

What you would normally see in games as pre-rendered cut scenes are now very close to the actual quality of the graphics in real time.
The games support multi-player play over the internet. I play every evening with people from all over the world, we have had two 4 man teams verse each other with 8 players from all over, that is mind boggling to me.

The new machines till now have only been items on magazine covers, they were too expensive, but now the prices are in home marketprice range and that is a whole another animal. As these machines go into homes and guests and friends come to see and use them the difference is astonishing. I am seeing the buying of the new stuff go up exponentially now. I know this is going to effect the technology market in a quarter or two at the most. I have seen it happen before.
Like I said this change is going to be more dramatic than the previous 486 to pentium change over and windows 95 era. Windows 98 is what windows 95 should have been, that said it is a must have. It is a lot more stabler and when it crashes you have control more often than not to shut down properly.

Again guys running on the new machines report much less crashes than what my generation of equipemnt do.

Here is a link to show the quality of equipment today. It might take time to load as there is much graphics, but it is worth the wait IMO.

2 months ago I personally knew one person that had a pentium II system. Now it has jumped to five and by next summer I am sure that all the people with kids at least, will have moved on up to pentium II's. That is a lot of new computers just in my sphere alone. And I know this sort of change is happening worldwide as I chat with players from all over.
