And more-

I am reading from many articles that exporters in Japan, South Korea, and the ASEAN countries are unable to take advantage of the competitive edge the currency devaluations have provided because they cannot obtain working capital.

In May, the US monthly trade deficit (98/97) with China increased over 9% (both exports and imports) but the trade deficit with Japan declined over 9% (both exports and imports). Chinese exporters are finding that the currency devaluations are not hurting them as badly as they anticipated. As in a prior post, much of it is due to raw material costs that are price dominated in $US.

Major purchases by China from the US have been fixed asset items (machinery) and exports were primarily consumer goods. China is not as yet involved in 'high tech' like many Asian countries and is still finding a market in the US and Europe for clothing, toys, appliances, and other consumer items (telephones?).

Because China has not devalued and continues to import, exporters have been able to ship products while the other Asian countries have a shortage of containers.

As Asian banks continue to tighten loan policies, the exporting companies will continue to have problems. Many of these companies are Deswell's competitors. THis is not an indicator that Deswell is increasing business, but that they should not be hurt as badly as one might think. I am looking for them to continue growth.

FWIW,
Ron
