Michael, I think the bulk of the noise on the Java subject is coming from Sun. The problem is that, to date, it has been primarly noise. The only noise I want to hear from Sun is the noise of them stamping-out servers. Servers that Microsoft and the PC makers can't deliver. The Java noise is entirely unnecessary, and is doing more harm than good.
