CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1996--Gensym Corp.
(NASDAQ:GNSM), a leading provider of software for creating
intelligent systems, today announced that Motorola Satellite
Communications Group has signed a $5 million agreement for Gensym
software products and support services for use in the IRIDIUM
satellite communications system.

Motorola will use Gensym's G2 and Fault Expert software
products in a comprehensive, integrated network management platform
for the IRIDIUM communications network. "Using Gensym's G2 and Fault
Expert, we are creating powerful solutions for intelligent network
management, including root-cause fault diagnosis and analysis and
operator decision support," said Michael Krutz, system control
segment software manager at Motorola Satellite Communications Group.
"Gensym software will allow us to keep the network up and running,
providing reliable communications worldwide."

The IRIDIUM system is a satellite-based, wireless personal
communications network designed to permit any type of telephone
transmission -- voice, data, fax, or paging -- to reach its
destination virtually anywhere on Earth. The communications network
includes 66 low-earth orbit satellites that collectively provide
global coverage.

"In this type of system," Krutz continued, "it is critical that
the network is always available, and if it goes down for some reason,
it must be repaired as quickly as possible. Motorola created the
original IRIDIUM system concept and is the prime contractor to
Iridium LLC. We chose Gensym's G2 and Fault Expert to develop and
deploy mission control applications, which we expect to reduce mean
time-to-repair, and increase the reliability of this highly complex
and dynamic communications system."

"This is an historic agreement for Gensym, as it is our largest
single order to date," said Gensym Chairman and CEO Lowell Hawkinson.
"Gensym is continuing to grow strongly in the communications markets.
This is another milestone on our path to solidifying our presence in
network management," Hawkinson continued. "One reason Motorola chose
to develop its network management applications using our G2 and Fault
Expert software is the products' proven use in mission-critical
satellite communications applications at INTELSAT, NASA, and ESA."

Motorola's G2-based IRIDIUM Integrated Network Management
application was recently recognized at Object World Frankfurt.
Motorola won first place in the "Best Implementation of a Distributed
Application Using Object Technology" category at the Object
Application Awards. "We are enthusiastic about our successful
relationship with Motorola, and we applaud them on their recent award
at Object World," Hawkinson concluded.
