Excel Communications Transitions International Call Traffic from Third
Party Carriers to Teleglobe Network
DALLAS, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Excel Communications, Inc. (NYSE: ECI - news) today announced that it has begun to transition its international call traffic to Teleglobe, Inc.'s (NYSE: TGO; Toronto; Montreal) intercontinental network. This move is expected to lower Excel's international network termination costs in each of the 74 countries included in the initial transition.
''We wanted to begin utilizing Teleglobe's engineering and network expertise as soon as possible,'' said Kenny A. Troutt, Excel's chairman, president and CEO. ''Moving our international traffic to Teleglobe's vast network is the first step in realizing the value of our complementary relationship.''
Excel will continue to evaluate ways to maximize the synergies between Excel and Teleglobe on a commercial basis prior to merger completion.
In June 1998, Excel announced a definitive agreement to merge with Montreal-based Teleglobe, Inc. in a transaction valued at $US7 billion. The merger of equals, which is subject to a number of conditions including U.S. and Canadian regulatory approval, is expected to be consummated prior to the end of this year.
