Matsushita Elec group to ship new DVD-ROM drives TOKYO, July 23 (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd said on Thursday that its group firm would begin shipment of internal DVD-ROM (digital video disc read-only-memory) drives to desk-top personal computer makers in Japan and the United States next month. The group firm, Matsushita Kotobuki Electronics Industries Ltd, aims to manufacture 200,000 units per month by the end of this year, a Matsushita Electric spokesman said. The new product can read DVD-ROM discs five times faster than the existing models, the spokesman said. Matsushita Kotobuki shipped the world's first DVD-ROM drives for desk-top PCs in November 1996 and those for notebook PCs in October 1997, he said. newsalert.com
