Mark- I agree that the telephony/wireless issue may be at odds, except for the following...

If I have my Nokia phone and I call 1800 ATT collect, I get charged for cellular calling THEN I get charged for the collect call. With a universal messenging system, like Webley you call in, still get charged the usage for the cell phone, then get charged the usage for webley access. The cell phone doesn't lose out, because you have to go through their service to use the other!

What carriers are really concerned about is the future of two way IP calls. When standards become more common in that arena, and Pipes open up (read cable modems here) then your basic AOL instant messenger becomes a voice conversation without long distance rates to your friend in thailand. Or if combined with a Portico or a Webley, you click on the voice mail your buddy in thailand just left you using the free web-interface (or the fax or the email for that matter) and the service connects you via TCP/IP to his home/work computer where you talk as if it was a phone.. without the LD charges.

thats the way I see it at least.
