New RSYS product announcement (12/09/96 Business Wire): RadiSys Corp. today announced the new EPC(R)-9 based on the Intel Pentium(a) processor for high-performance embedded applications, the first VME product that is field-upgradable to the Intel Pentium Pro processor. The RadiSys EPC-9 is a full-featured board, with on-board Ethernet and SCSI II, IDE hard drive, Universal Serial Bus (USB) and two PMC slots for PCIbus expansion. The EPC-9 modular processor design is the first to provide field-upgradable VME, allowing OEMs to upgrade the computer simply by replacing the module with a Pentium Pro processor module. RadiSys will introduce a Pentium Pro processor module in the same form factor in the first half of 1997. "Clearly Intel high-performance processors and Microsoft Windows NT are building momentum in the overall embedded market, and the VME segment is no exception," said Mark Budzinski, director of marketing for RadiSys' System Products Division. "Designers of embedded VME products are very interested in integrating Pentium today, with plans for Pentium Pro tomorrow. EPC-9 gives those customers a feature-rich product that will carry them smoothly into their next generation design." EPC-9 Features EPC-9 is a dual slot PC/AT-compatible board with VMEbus and a complete set of features that includes: four 72-pin SODIMM sockets, 256K secondary cache, auto-sensing 10/100 Base T Ethernet controller on-board with front panel RJ45 connector, fast SCSI II controller on-board with front panel connector, two USB ports via front panel, two serial ports and one parallel port, mouse and keyboard controllers and EXMbus expansion. EPC-9 offers exceptional flexibility with an optional 2.5-inch on-board IDE 1.44GB hard drive that fits on the two-slot EPC-9 without requiring an additional slot, and an optional SVGA PMC module. By offering video in a low-cost PMC form factor, the EPC-9 offers an optimal video solution that is easily upgradable. If video is not required for the application, two PMC slots are available for other functions. EPC-9 is available with a 100-, 133-, 166- or 200MHz Pentium processor-based module, which will be upgradable to a Pentium Pro processor module. Price and Availability Customer samples of the EPC-9 will be available this month, with volume shipments scheduled for March 1997. The EPC-9 with a 133MHz Pentium processor and 8MB DRAM has a list price of $3,527 for quantities of 100. The SVGA PMC module has a list price of $206 for quantities of 100. Samples of the Pentium Pro processor-based module will be available Q1 1997, with first customer deliveries scheduled for Q2 1997. RadiSys Corp.
