"Because cable telephony technology is not mature enough or cost effective enough presently for mass deployment, and IP telephony is still in its infancy."

DenverTechie, I was afraid you would say this and it's what I beginning to believe. COX cable is having some success at it in three of their markets (US markets, nonetheless). But it sure doesn't get a lot of press. Which puzzles the heck out of me? Either it's working well and they don't want to let competitors know about it, or it's not working well and they don't want anyone to know about it. I can't figure it out.

Another thing I can't figure out, is it a true IP packet-switched voice network or not? When I read about the voice over HFC rollouts, they NEVER describe it in detail. So sometimes I'm wondering if they are just delivering POTS over a coaxial cable. Is this even feasible? Those voice over HFC announcements suspiciously lack a lot of detail....Hiram, if you are reading this please correct me if I'm wrong. Don't you think the voice over HFC announcements we have read, lack detail also?

"In fact, the advantages of HFC for providing video could be why GTE is exploring it now since xDSL is not well suited for video."

Well GTE is providing TV video/movies, and I believe it's even digital by now. They have an excellent system. Higher quality picture and sound versus Time Warner's cable TV network. They never advertise their network. I was the only one in the neighborhood at the time to try it...I'm lost on this one? I don't know what they are up to.

My best guess was, since they are not pushing their service much now, they just wanted to get an accurate handle on the costs involved in getting rid of copper and replacing it with HFC. That's the only thing I can figure. But then they don't offer voice over it? Maybe they are working heavily on trying to get voice over it. So far it's not available. A real puzzle considering GTE is, after all, a telephone company.
