pride, re:i think bob would be the first to admit that his timing was bad in relation to his recommendation for utek.
actually, bob has yet to admit "squat didley" about UTEK. he will probably be the last to admit it, that is, if he ever does admit it.
however, to think that somebody could always make recommendations that double in a year is foolish.
i agree it's a foolish thought.
it would have been impossible to predict the asian crisis and the potential impact it would have on this sector.
i agree. that's why i think bob got lucky when he sold new asia. he didn't have a clue. he sold it because the fund had horrible performance since his buy recommendation (post 1993).
so, it might have been impossible to predict, but bob continued his buy recommendation well after all the asian news had been disseminated throughout the world. if I recall he didn't think UTEK would be effected by the asian crisis. he thought that chip-makers had to buy the latest equipment to remain competitive. and even if asia were to be a problem, he concluded UTEK didn't have too much exposure in asia, so he continued to recommend UTEK on any short-term weakness.
i would rather get in or out of a stock early then to late.
o.k., just don't forget about your opportunity cost.
bob predicted the impending asian crisis last june when he made a switch out of the tr price new asia fund into vanguard international...great advice and i profited from the trade. his comments relating to utek at the time was that it had relatively light presense in asia compared to most of the other competitors. obviously he was wrong. but a guy can only do the best that he can and nobody has a crystal ball.
nice back tracking...i agree nobody has a crystal ball.
...because i got in the stock on bob's advice in the 14 and 15 dollar range...
well, at least you acknowledge that an NBR recommendation should be considered a recommendation, but remember that UTEK wasn't a ROARING BUY until after bob recommended UTEK on NBR at $25 on May 31, 1996. if you got in at $14 or $15, then you are doing better than most of those who followed bob's advice on UTEK. did you buy more at $24 and $30?
...and do not feel that it will fall below that level.
well, let's just hope it doesn't fall below that level. that would be awful. i remember while UTEK was going down most people didn't think it would fall below $25, or $22, or $19, or ...
as far as i'm concerned he got me in at the bottom...
...and he's almost done a round trip.
...and i'll wait for the ride up whenever that may be.
well, it was supposed to be 12 to 18 months from July '97, but i guess now it's 1999 or 2000. heck, maybe if UTEK doesn't go up by then, it'll start being a 2001/2002 story. <g>
i have listened to his show since 1986 and so far this is the only recommendation that i can recall that hasn't worked out exactly as he had planned...not to bad if you ask me. i take that back, also his recommendation of standford telecom on NBR has been a lagger but also has good long term potential.
again, at least you acknowledge that NBR recommendations count as recommendations, but let's not forget about KMAG, ONTK, and AMAT.
best regards.
