If you can't figure out your balance at Brown & Co, I don't understand why. You click on balance and a number shows up to reflect your buying power -- only one number. That's cash balance. You double it for marginable stocks but use it "as is" for options and non-marginable stocks. Your buying power is adjusted nightly depending on the value of the marginable stocks and cash in your portfolio. When the value changes by a particular percentage (not a small change), the buying power generated by the marginable stocks and cash in your portfolio will change.

You're so right about the commission issue. For Brown and Waterhouse, you must not screw up and place an order for over 5000 shares or you lose that very low commission. You can split your order, though and place the orders as 5,000 shares each. I don't find that difficult to remember, personally, but I agree that it's a drawback.

You reported Web Street to NASD? Good for you!

I appreciate your warning about Sure Trade. Any warnings are good. My experience with Web Street has been very costly to me and I don't want to risk that happening again.
