SAP's software runs the core business systems of our world's largest corporations. Because of this market power, they are in an amazing position to both innovate and control entire market segments. Take for example business to business systems (extranets). If they control the inner workings of enough systems, they hold the key to allow these systems to talk to one another over the Internet. This would drive more people towards their products and force their competitors to adhere to THEIR innovations. Bottom line, their sheer market power will provide them with ample opportunities to diversify.
