FWIW, one of the earliest products that did dynamic compilation was a developer's product called Instant-C. It permitted rapid development of C applications, because the turnaround time to fix a bug was reduced from several minutes to seconds.

The company? Rational Software.

They were forced to develop a DOS extender to accomodate ever-larger C programs, and to enable a full 640K "target" system while keeping the symbol table and source code in "extended" memory.

Instant-C faded into history. The DOS extender remained, and helped usher-in the 32-bit PC world.
