Good comments, Gary. I think also that internet forums like those here at SI encourage people who in real life may be quite innocuous to lash out viciously at those of whose point of view they disapprove. Some take advantage of the anonymity an alias offers; others join in with their buddies to attack the "undesirables". This is happening right now on the EDII thread. Typical bully tactics. And then when they go too far and find themselves suspended, they whine that the people they went after receive "special treatment" from Admin.

But there's nothing much to be done about it. There are a great many more followers in the world than leaders, and these folks are generally willing to give their allegiance to anyone who'll tell 'em what they want to hear.
