Roger:

Do you know any progressive thinking bankers in Oregon, by any chance? Would love to discuss the concept of an Oregon Internet Bank with someone around these parts.

I agree that the prospect of competition is the Achilles heel for NTBK. For consumers to move accounts to the best deal will be nearly effortless in the internet bank world. A geographic loyalty or other affinity (such as The Gay and Lesbian Bank) might mitigate this.

In fact, this feeling permeates all my internet investment thinking - the barriers to competition are minimal and the retail sector will be commoditized to a great degree - as in Amazon, Preview Travel, Egghead and the rest. This talk I hear about the first company in a niche having it locked up is TOTALLY INCORRECT! If someone sells books for 15% less Amazon's price, who you gonna buy from? It will advertise itself! The internet makes shopping efficient.
