Rather than shorting stocks directly, I would suggest you to buy puts.
Yes, your potential gain will be reduced by the amount of paid premium, but it is good price to pay for the protection from UNLIMITED loss. This is particularly true when dealing with hype stocks such as AMZN or AOL because their prices can defy the laws of gravity and of common sense. Just imagine what would happen to your short position (and to you) if on Monday AMZN goes to $500. You say it is impossible? Well, it is no more irrational than it's current valuation.
