I take it you meant you went to sell at 5 1/2 and got 5 9/16 on a limit. Here is an example: My brother-n-law and I both trade. We both owned the same stock and same amount of shares on a stock that was running. He placed a market order and I placed a limit which was lower than the ask at market open. All said and done I got a penny higher than he did. The reason you may ask? This stock was running and the MM's could not stop that. All market orders were filled first. By the time they got to my limit order the price was up higher and a limit order means my price or better so I got the better! What I am saying is depending on the stock action you can benefit either way.

Now you take someone who is selling but the stock is not running. MM's may drop the price for your trade and then bring it back up, and basically you lose. It really comes down to knowing that stock and thinking of MM's as investors.
