Ken, what VegaStream and Telogy have done is vaguely reminiscent of the form factors achieved and the use of DSPs by COMS and ASND, and others lately, in their remote access concentrator gear which incorporate new VoIP capabilities.
Some DSLAMs and routers have done this as well. The improvements in pricing at the port levels are very impressive, but I feel that these will go down to the under $100 levels before long. Think of what has happened to 10/100BaseT Fast Ethernet cards, whose cards and hubs, themselves, may well be incorporating VoIP-enabling DSPs and software before long, taking the processing loads off of CPUs.
============ BTW, for those of you who visit here frequently, but do not lurk or participate in the Last Mile Thread, there is an interesting dialog going on over there concerning DSL, Cable Modems, Wireless, and how VoIP might be supported by all of the above, as well.
Check it out, and donate to the cause there if you so desire. These two threads (VoIP and Last Mile) are closely related to one another, IMO, as they both speak to the issues of convergence, and should really be merged into one. If there were only a convenient way of doing so.
