Illegal Viagra finds its way to Sri Lanka - report

COLOMBO, July 25 (Reuters) - The blockbuster impotence pill Viagra is available illegally in tiny Sri Lanka for those willing to pay the high price, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

The independent Island said a Viagra pill was available in the black market for as much as 1,300 rupees ($19.80), nearly double its U.S. retail price of $10.

''The drug is technically illegal in Sri Lanka since it has not been registered and approved by the Cosmetic Devices and Drugs Authority (CDDA),'' the newspaper quoted Health Ministry officials as saying.

The newspaper said officials of the CDDA, which has powers to take legal action against pharmacies selling an unapproved drug, were not aware that Viagra was being sold in the country.

Health Ministry officials were not immediately available for comment.

Viagra is scheduled to be launched in Europe by end-August or early September and in Japan by early next year, officials of manufacturers Pfizer Inc (PFE - news) said recently of the drug that is expected to notch up $1 billion in sales in its first year.
