I run Solaris on both a SPARCStation 2 and a PC. Right now I don't pay any maintenance, hardware or software, on either. As I recall I paid about $150 for the SPARC server version of the OS and about $250 for the PC server version (that included one year's maintenance, which I think expired shortly after 2.6 arrived, but I think it was a special or upgrade price -- sorry I don't recall the details right now, but it was similar to or less than what NT would have cost).

Academic prices are even cheaper. I think list prices are higher, but they run frequent competitive upgrade and other specials, and it's available at a discount from third-party vendors.

Patches are available free at the site I posted, but I believe there are service contracts available for those who need quicker or customized response to problems, etc. If you actually went to the site I cited, you might have noted that even some very old versions of the OS continue to be supported. I'm not sure whether you can still get current patches from Microsoft for, say, MS-DOS 5.0.

JMHO.
