Chaz,

like I said on the last post, I am very sketchy on the information myself.

As for the chances of success, I remember reading an article once about Zhu Rongji. He has an amazingly clean slate. When he declared he was going after corruption, he said he is going to take with him 100 coffins, 99 for his targets but reserving one of himself.

Massive pressures have been put on the police force so far but the army is a different story. What is their chance of success? I really don't know but I am not bet either way. As an example, I think it was last year or the year before that a top naval commander was busted for using battle ships to transport/smuggle car parts from Europe. Is the new China politically mature enough to address this level of corruption? The US political infrastructure is so strong that we have a tendency to down play the role of the military in politics. Whereas in many parts of the world, political leadership is ineffective without the backing of the military.

Another recent article that I read stated China is putting the WTO in the back burner. The current economic may require delaying some the reforms imposed as condition to entry. To say China is facing an economic crisis is an understatement. They just don't have time to be jacked around just to gain nothing more than status by joining the WTO.

I never understood why the Chinese are so desperate to join the WTO anyway. All they have to wait a year or two and the WTO will be begging China to join. Based on what we know about Japan right now, does anyone really think the Japanese banking system meets the stringent requirements imposed on China as a barrier to WTO entry? Yet, can the WTO afford to exclude the second largest economy in the world?

Erwin was in Beijing earlier this year. I was hoping that he would bring back news of the status in China. At this moment, I am of the opinion the PLA is the stumbling block. May be someone with current knowledge would shed some light on this subject. How about Gregg? Use your muscle and get QC's IR to issue a press release.
