<1) Unix OS's are not more expensive than MSFT's. Solaris for the X86 platform, for one, is priced competitively with NT, and Linux is much cheaper (free or nominal) than any of MSFT's OS's. I was shocked at the prices I've seen recently for NT; they appear to me to be MUCH HIGHER than those for Unix.>
Absolutely untrue. Unix's biggest marketing point has been TCO (total cost of ownership). Basically, they are saying Wintel may be cheaper up front, but in the long run it will come back to bite you. Teh end users have realized when you factor in the availability of applications, third party developer support, and the expense of the underlying hardware (whcih has been commodized), everything about Unix ismore expensive. Why don't you think Unix ever made it big on teh desk top. Too expensive, they could not amortize development costs over a wide enough revenue base to beat Wintel.
<3) This "point" is meaningless, because the competitors to MSFT's OS's are not "unsupported." We've just been through that. Of course there are varying degrees and means of support, as well as various pricing plans.>
Whay competitive Unix uprade matches or bests the feature set, third party app support, hardware/driver support and technical support of Win 98? Nuff said. |
