THat was a GREAT poem!!! I'm copying it out.

I don't know what Ravel meant by 'music'. He was pretty insecure and dissatisfied with his work. He was also a depressive who died of brain disease after surgery. But he did love cats, and spoke "cat language", which I find endearingly peculiar.

Please don't squeeze the orchestral tissue!

I think he was just playing with the sonorities of the orchestra-all the different ways you could change the fabric using a simple rhythm (a bolero) and a simple melody.

Music to me is just organized sounds. Certain tonalities and structures have more appeal to some than others. I don't think there's a right or wrong, good or bad. Much of what appeals to us is what we were exposed to when young, what we heard in our cultures, or maybe at impressionable periods, taught by people who wielded some influence over us.

Texas has been declared a disaster area. We aren't allowed to water our lawns---big penalties. And there is no end in sight. I can't remember a more miserable summer here. So Dan and I went to see Titanic at the dollar theatre again. And then I came home and read Myths to Live By-(Campbell) where he talks about the recognition of mortality and the need to transcend it....which made me think of the discussion here..and how angry everyone gets trying to assert themselves and their beliefs! Do you think that people argue because they need their beliefs validated or they don't feel real? As George has so poignantly asked, Can't we just let it be?

So thank you for the poems and the change of pace. You know, the problem I'm having is that I find myself very angry at the negativity---which just makes me part of it! What's the solution to that?
