Motorola Taps Staiano for Posts At Iridium, Its Wireless Venture
Dow Jones News Services

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. -- Semiconductor and telecommunications concern Motorola Inc. Monday said it named Edward Staiano vice chairman and chief executive of Iridium LLC, a Motorola-led consortium that will operate a satellite-based global wireless communications network.

Motorola, which is the project's prime contractor and Iridium's largest investor, said Mr. Staiano is retiring as executive vice president of Motorola. Iridium's first satellites are expected to be launched soon and the service is to become operational in late 1998.

Motorola has stumbled lately because of trouble in its analog cellular phone and semiconductor markets. The company is betting heavily that satellite-based systems will play a major role in the wireless communications world. Motorola is also making big investments in other new technologies, such as advanced cellular phone systems, which could compete with satellite systems.

Iridium and a host of other technology ventures are gambling billions of dollars in a race to provide global cellular services via a network of low-orbit satellites. Iridium, based on a network of 66 low earth orbit satellites, aims to offer digital voice, paging and basic data services anywhere in the world. The product is mainly intended for the international business traveler who wants to retain communication contacts while outside the reach of cellular and land-based networks.
