Well why dont you look at it the other way. When VVUS was hitting 38 everyone was saying it was going to 80. And how many people sold at 40? They all thought it was going much much higher. Now the long term trend is down and fundamentals look weak, competition is killing them, management frankly sucks. Why should anyone cover?
What can change this? Well fundamentats look like its hit bottom, management reshuffling, stock looks to have hit bottom. But the shorts did not have enough time to play at these levels to cover enough shares. IOM gives a good example of how the shorts play. Actually once the shorts cover a lot of pressure is taken off the stock as they will let the stock rise to its previous levels before re shorting rather than putting up a wall. The way VVUS trades and the lack of intelligence of many shorts on VVUS I would not think a whole lot of shorts have made money of VVUS, most of them just like the longs had paper profits that just well they gave over to the bigger money.
