The Federal Highway Administration has award- ed $6 million to a UCSD-led consortium that has been developing a proposal to build the nation's first bridge to be constructed with advanced composite materials. The proposed bridge would span Inter- state 5 to connect UCSD's west campus near Gilrnan drive to the east campus, near UCSD's Thornton hospital. UCSD gets $6 million grant for 1-5 bridge
UNION-TRIBUNE
The Federal Highway Adminis- tration has awarded UC San Diego a $6 million grant to build an ad- vanced-technology bridge over In- terstate 5, linking the west and east sides of campus between Gilman and La Jolla Village Drives.
The 450-foot "advanced compos- ites" bridge will use a technology derived in part from defense and aerospace research, engineers said. The materials are expected to lead to cheaper and faster construction, ending with a bridge that requires less maintenance than a conven- tional span and is more resistant to earthquakes.
The four-lane bridge will be sup- ported by a huge pylon, with dozens of carbon or carbon/steel cables running down to the roadbed. The four-year grant was announced on campus yesterday by U.S. Sen. Bar- bara Boxer, D-Calif.
